remote shoots

What is Remote Shooting?!

Remote shooting is a new way of shooting, allowing photographers from virtually anywhere in the world to photograph me from my location through the wonders of modern technology. This method allows for quality images to be taken and for photographers to have control over the settings of the camera, unlike zoom/facetime shoots. In short: I set up my camera on a tripod and connect it to my laptop with Canon EOS utility software, which you remotely control on your laptop via TeamViewer. We then use Skype or another app to make a voice call to communicate. You will be remotely controlling my software through your computer. It can be handy to practice before the shoot if possible, however. There is an assitant that would help moving the camera,etc...

What does the photographer need to have? A laptop/computer with stable internet connection. TeamViewer software. This is how you remotely control my camera from your PC. It can be downloaded at this link for free for personal use: https://www.teamviewer.com/en/credentials/free-for-personal-use/

What level of control does this give you over the camera? EOS utility allows you to choose focus points, focus using the shutter button and change virtually all manual settings in one column. You watch the live preview as you shoot and you can watch the histogram. You can check the preview (not in full resolution) of the last photo you took in a separate window. Here is a youtube video you can take a look at to see how it works: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bg2U2vxBir8

My personal set up/equipment: EOS Utility : For tethered shooting (comes free with newer Canon Cameras). If you have a Canon, I recommend having a practice with this software before shooting. If not, the youtube video link above will help. I use this with a USB cable connecting my 5D to my laptop. DSLR: Canon EOS 5D MkII. Lenses: Yongnuo 50mm 1.8, Canon 75-300 mm 1.5m/4.9ft, Canon 20-35mm f/3.5-4.5.

Lighting: I have great natural window light (soft and moody on cloudy days, great shadow & light play on sunny days) so generally stick to this. Standard lighting kit included:

  • Diffusers of 6 colors

  • 2 standard reflector

  • Reflector bright 180cm 5 in 1.

-White and Black backgrounds.

  • 2 Godox MS300 flash units

  • 1 Godox Xpro transmitter

  • 1 Godox light window 60 x 90cm

  • 1 Neewer Octa light window 140cm

  • 2 Portalite umbrellas 85cm translucent

I also have a continius light with a softbox of 50x70cm 85W

End of shooting: When the shoot ends, I begin to upload all the raws directly into a Google Drive folder or I will use WeTransfer. This can either be shared to your email, or a link sent to you if you don’t have enough space Drive account, so you can download photos directly to your PC.
